West Hollywood is a small, dense city wedged against Beverly Hills, and it changes character every few blocks. In West Hollywood the Sunset Strip runs along the northern edge with hotels, rooftop bars and music clubs that stay loud late, while Santa Monica Boulevard works as the main street and the long-running center of LGBTQ+ nightlife, Pride and the Halloween Carnaval. Prewar walk-ups from the 1920s through the 1940s mix with postwar multifamily buildings, and the newest condos cluster closer to Sunset. Parks are small and busy. The main city park on San Vicente, next to the library, has a pool with lap lanes and tennis courts on a rooftop five floors up. Tail o' the Pup, the 1946 roadside stand built in the form of a giant mustard-topped frank, came back in 2022 at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd. For coffee, Alana's Coffee Roasters on Robertson Boulevard sits in the Design District, where daytime cafes feed off the showroom traffic and evenings are calmer than on Sunset. Errands are easy on foot. Whole Foods and two Trader Joe's stores sit along Santa Monica Boulevard, Gelson's and Pavilions cover the rest, and the Helen Albert Certified Farmers' Market sets up on Vista Street. The free WeHo PickUp trolley runs along Santa Monica late at night. The tradeoff is noise and parking. Blocks near Sunset and Santa Monica pick up crowds and bass on weekend nights, and most residential streets use permit parking. Step two blocks off the boulevard into the Norma Triangle, though, and the sound of the boulevard drops away to a plain residential street of bungalows and dog walkers.
