Golf greens, farm fields and the Via de la Valle corridor make up Whispering Palms, the low-lying southwest edge of Rancho Santa Fe below the Covenant. The name goes back to 1960, when a developer bought 300 acres of the old Osuna land grant here and opened a golf course five years later. Solana Beach and Del Mar are the next towns west. Housing in Whispering Palms is more varied than in the estate areas uphill. Around the fairways, the Greens neighborhoods hold detached single-family homes, while Alcala, Belmundo and The Villas are townhouse and condominium enclaves on curving private lanes. The golf course itself is La Valle Coastal Club, the private 27-hole club long known as Morgan Run, renamed after a multimillion-dollar renovation that also remade its boutique Guesthouse hotel. The public side of outdoor life is San Dieguito County Park on Lomas Santa Fe Drive, with two duck ponds, open lawns, picnic pavilions and an Activity Hill of fitness stations, ladders and suspension bridges. The La Orilla trailhead on El Camino Real, just outside the neighborhood, leads to an overlook of San Elijo Lagoon. Food here starts with the farm. The Vegetable Shop at Chino Farm, on Calzada del Bosque, sells corn, strawberries and tomatoes grown by the Chino family, whose produce caught the attention of Alice Waters and plenty of San Diego chefs. Market Restaurant + Bar on Via de la Valle cooks farm-to-table menus with the seasons and changed hands in 2025, staying a family-run kitchen that buys from local farms. Groceries and everyday shopping are closest at Flower Hill Promenade and the Del Mar shopping centers to the west. Via de la Valle connects to the coast and to Interstate 5, and the Solana Beach station on Cedros Avenue has the Coaster and Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner. The neighborhood lacks a center of its own. There is no walkable main street, and the Covenant's private trail network does not extend here. In late spring the Chino stand fills with strawberries, and a morning here can mean a tee time and a bag of fresh corn before the coast fog lifts.
