Santa Fe Valley follows the San Dieguito River below Lake Hodges, along the eastern reach of Rancho Santa Fe where Del Dios Highway drops out of the gorge. Oak-lined river bottom, preserved hillsides and a golf course fill most of the land, and the planned neighborhoods of 4S Ranch and Del Sur rise just across the line on the east and south sides. The Crosby is the largest community here, a gated golf neighborhood that opened in 2001 with Spanish Colonial Revival homes modeled on the Lilian Rice buildings of the old village to the west. Red tile roofs, stucco and courtyards repeat across a mix of villas, semi-custom houses and custom estates, and the Fred Couples course winds through the middle. A long bridge carries the entry road over the river, and roughly 190 acres inside the gates stay as open space. Hiking is the reason to know Santa Fe Valley even if you never live in it. The open space preserve covers the slopes along the highway, and a staging area beside a produce stand opens onto the Del Dios Gorge Trail, one leg of the river-to-mountains Coast to Crest route. The path follows the water past remnants of the Hodges Flume to a viewpoint with a stone rattlesnake and a first look at the dam. A second trail splits off toward the upper valley, and Lake Hodges sits just upstream. Paradise Produce Market, that same stand at 8175 Del Dios Highway, is the one shop inside the valley and a regular stop for fruit and vegetables. For meals, the Del Sur Town Center on Paseo del Sur sits just over the line in Black Mountain Ranch. Piacere Mio makes fresh pasta and Neapolitan pizza there, and Harland Brewing opened a taproom and restaurant in the center in January 2026. Sprouts handles groceries. Daily driving splits two ways. Del Dios Highway heads west toward the coast, and the roads through Del Sur and 4S Ranch reach Interstate 15, with each freeway about five miles off. Beyond houses, open space and the course, there is very little here, so even a cup of coffee means crossing into a neighboring community. On a weekday morning the gorge trail can feel more remote than the gated streets a mile away, and for people who live in Santa Fe Valley that quiet stretch of river is part of the neighborhood.
