Willow Glen, San Jose, CA

Willow Glen is the neighborhood that made central San Jose feel like a small town, and it has the origin story to match. The name comes from the willow-and-cattail marsh that once filled this low ground between the Guadalupe River and Los Gatos Creek, drained in 1860 to open the land to orchards. When San Jose tried to route the Southern Pacific railroad down Lincoln Avenue in the 1920s, residents were so opposed that they incorporated their own independent City of Willow Glen in 1927, then voted to be annexed back into San Jose in 1936 to get sewer service. That fiercely local streak never left. Lincoln Avenue is still the heart of it. The strip, whose name was changed from Willow Glen Road back in 1865 to honor the just-assassinated Abraham Lincoln, is a walkable main street of independent restaurants, cafes and shops, and it hosts the neighborhood's Founders Day parade and a decades-old Christmas tree-light tradition. Around it spreads a flat grid of early-1900s bungalows and period homes under a deep tree canopy, with Frank Bramhall Park, an elementary founded in 1863, and the Los Gatos Creek corridor all close at hand. The honest tradeoffs are the price, since this is one of central San Jose's most established and in-demand neighborhoods, and the freeway edges, with Interstate 280 to the north and Highway 87 to the east bringing noise at the margins. Even the recent history is local lore here: the seven-year fight to save the 1922 Willow Glen Trestle over Los Gatos Creek ended with its 2020 demolition and a new pedestrian bridge.
