Ceres is the farm-valley city strung along Highway 99 in Stanislaus County, with Modesto just up the road and Turlock a bit farther down it. Its name comes from the goddess of grain and harvests, a fitting label for ground that settlers began farming in the late 1860s. Two Whitmore family homes, one finished in 1870 and a larger mansion from 1903, are the historic buildings people point to, and the city itself incorporated in 1918. Houseberry splits Ceres into five neighborhoods. Downtown Ceres is the small old center around Fourth Street, where cafes, the library and a museum sit close together. North Ceres is the biggest piece, a residential and shopping area that reaches toward Modesto along Herndon Road. Eastgate leans on Mitchell Road and the Tuolumne River, East Ceres is the southeast corner with strip-center dining, and West Ceres mixes subdivisions with business parks and breweries. Homes across the city are mostly single-family houses in subdivisions, with the oldest near downtown and at least one manufactured-home park along Mitchell Road. The look is plain and practical. Eleven city parks serve the grid, and Ceres River Bluff Regional Park, 76 acres on the Tuolumne River, is the largest. A lake path circles part of it, and hot air balloons launch from it each fall. A free summer concert series runs in the parks, while the downtown Street Faire in May and the Christmas Tree Lane celebration in December anchor the calendar. For food, Sam's Cafe is the breakfast habit, Beto's Bakery turns out pan dulce, Mother India Cuisine draws diners to Mitchell Road, and Zoe's Coffee Roasting Co does the roasting out west. Highway 99 is the spine for commuting to Modesto and beyond, and a car handles nearly every errand. The same highway splits the city and sets up the main tradeoff, since its traffic shapes noise and travel on both sides. Ceres is a working Central Valley city that still has a small downtown, a river park and a long calendar of local events.
