Eastgate is where Ceres runs out of town and into the river. The reason to know it is Ceres River Bluff Regional Park at 3761 East Hatch Road, a 76-acre preserve beside the Tuolumne River, with a lake, a boat ramp, benches and trails that regulars use for dog walks and jogs. Hot air balloons launch from the park in the fall, and soccer fields sit beside it. The park's lower terrace has been reopened after improvement work, and the lake path is the draw for evening walkers. Smaller parks fill in the grid. Neel Park, Persephone Park and Glenbrook Park are neighborhood lawns among single-family streets, and the Ceres Soccer Complex handles weekend games. The city lists eleven parks, and the largest of them is here. Between the river and these greens, Eastgate has more open space than any other part of the city. Mitchell Road is the dining and shopping spine. Mother India Cuisine at 1778 Mitchell Road serves butter chicken, lamb biryani and street snacks such as pani puri, with a weekday lunch special and a reputation for friendly service. Sticky Rice is the Thai choice and Carnitas Michoacan is a Mexican spot. Donut Delite handles the morning pastry run, a paleteria called Frozen World covers dessert, and Del Sol Market and Food 4 Less take care of groceries. Housing is mostly ordinary single-family streets, and the busy part of the neighborhood is the commercial frontage on Mitchell Road rather than the blocks behind it. Highway 99 is close, so Modesto is a quick drive north and Turlock a quick drive south. The independent coffee shops and the old downtown sit back toward the center of Ceres, which makes this side of the city car-oriented for anything beyond Mitchell Road. When the afternoon heat fades, though, the lake path fills with walkers, and Eastgate feels like the city's back porch.
