East Ceres is the city's southeast corner, and a lot of its daily life happens along Mitchell Road, where the strip centers hold most of the places to eat. Blu Lotus Lao & Thai Restaurant at 3641 Mitchell Road is the standout, with a menu that works Lao dishes in alongside the Thai standards and a dim, cozy dining room. Dessert is a specialty here. La Monarca Michoacana and La Jungla Michoacana serve Mexican paletas and ice cream, Cold Stone Creamery does the chain version, and Quickly handles frozen yogurt. The Ceres Courier has followed a new five-building center at Mitchell and Roeding roads, planned with restaurant space and two drive-through pads, beside a smaller existing center. For something savory, Morena's Taqueria, La Cascada Mexican Restaurant and Mi Lindo Culiacan each draw their own following, and Indian Sweets Food & Spices stocks sweets and spices. Coffee comes from Starbucks, and the independent shops downtown are a short drive north. Housing is conventional single-family streets behind the commercial frontage, spread over a little under one square mile, with a quieter feel a block or two off the main road. Park space is small but present. Roeding Heights Park, Redwood Park and Redwood Neighborhood Park are the neighborhood greens, handy for a quick walk or a ball game. Bigger outdoor trips mean heading north toward River Bluff Regional Park on the Tuolumne River. Save Mart anchors groceries, and nearly everything else, from restaurants to errands, sits within a short drive of the same corner. Chains such as Chipotle and Waffle House are in the mix too, for a quick stop. Highway 99 is the main link to Modesto and Turlock, and Mitchell Road itself carries a steady stream of local traffic. That traffic is the tradeoff in East Ceres. A good meal and a grocery are never far, but the main road is busy and built for cars.
