North Ceres is ranked #4 of 5 neighborhoods in Ceres with an overall score of 2.9/5. Its standout factor is safety (3.8/5, 4th of 5 in Ceres). The trade-offs are schools (2.4/5) and curb appeal (2.7/5).
North Ceres is the largest part of the city and the part that meets Modesto, so it behaves like a suburb with a commercial strip stitched through it. Herndon Road is where that strip shows up most, and Hot Rod Diner at 1515 Herndon is the retro stop for breakfast, steak sandwiches and ribs, with karaoke nights on the calendar. Reviews mention consistently tasty food, with service that can vary. For something more local, Beto's Bakery at 1911 Central Avenue bakes pan dulce fresh each day, with a second shop in Modesto, and the conchas are the item everyone mentions. The cafe counter also does a Tres Leches latte. The shop closes at 8 p.m. And takes Sundays off. Taquerias and Mexican restaurants are dense across the area, and Starbucks and Dutch Bros handle the quick coffee run for anyone who skips the independents. Housing here is mostly single-family streets on a loose grid, spread over nearly three square miles. Blocks closer to downtown are older, and the neighborhood gets newer as it heads north. Ceres has eleven city parks in all, and several of them sit within this neighborhood. Smyrna Community Park is the main green space, and the city landed a $2.9 million grant for improvements there. Berry Grove Park, Riverview Park and Independence Park are smaller neighborhood lawns, and Ceres Skatepark gives skaters a place of their own. The Tuolumne River and the big regional park are a drive away. Food 4 Less, Cost Less Foods and Grocery Outlet cover groceries without leaving the neighborhood. Highway 99 carries commuters north into Modesto, and the commercial strip is built around cars. North Ceres has plenty of commercial frontage, and the busiest stretches are chain-heavy, with the usual fast-food row, so finding independent places takes a little local knowledge. The reward for learning it is a good bakery and a diner with real character, both inside this one neighborhood.
