Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Allendale Rec Center, Starter-friendly bungalows, Freeway-edge convenience

Allendale is a flat, tidy diamond of streets south of MacArthur, built out in the 1920s and filled in after the war. The blocks run perpendicular to Allendale Avenue, the old streetcar spine, and hold a mix of small cottages, post-war bungalows, and a few low apartment courts on narrow, mostly fenced lots. Plane trees shade some stretches; others run broad and sun-exposed, especially where the I-580 sound wall edges the northeast corner. The neighborhood's anchor is its own: Allendale Recreation Center brings ball courts, a playground, and a summer day camp right inside the boundary, and Brookdale Park touches the southern tip for bigger lawns. The commercial node on MacArthur is modest but useful, a taqueria, a donut shop, a hardware store, with the fuller Laurel dining strip two blocks east. Continuous sidewalks and the AC Transit Rapid bus make errands doable without a car, though speeding on 38th Avenue and freeway noise are the standing complaints. This is unpretentious, do-it-yourself Oakland. Yard-sale signs go up most weekends, longtime owners trade news on front porches, and rehab projects sit next to homes still waiting their turn. The value is a real community center, starter pricing, and quick freeway access, with thin tree canopy and the hum of 580 as the cost of admission.
