Allied Gardens rose fast on the old Waring Ranch at the eastern end of Mission Valley in San Diego, with grading in 1953 and roughly 4,000 houses standing by 1957. The name has nothing to do with the war. It comes from Allied Contractors, the company run by builders Louis Kelton and Walter Bollenbacher. Homes in Allied Gardens are mostly the original single-story ranch houses, many with two-car garages, and the first ones went up on Twain Avenue. Decades of additions and remodels have given the matching tract rooflines some variety. Attached homes and apartments show up closer to the commercial streets. The center of neighborhood life is the Allied Gardens Recreation Center on Greenbrier Avenue, beside Lewis Middle School, with ball fields and a big public pool around the corner on Glenroy Street that has a diving board and a shallow wading pool. Little League games fill the fields down the hill on Estrella. For bigger outings, the Navajo Canyon trailhead is close by in neighboring Del Cerro, and the western entrance to Mission Trails Regional Park is up Mission Gorge Road. Food is local and unfussy. Brothers Family Restaurant on Waring Road has been serving breakfast until 2 p.m. since 1994, and people line up for the Belgian waffles and the French dip. Better Buzz pours coffee on Mission Gorge Road at Zion. Good Pressure Brewing took over a former cidery farther east on Mission Gorge Road and pours a West Coast IPA and a coffee oatmeal stout, with food trucks outside and trivia on Tuesdays. Errands cluster on two strips. The short Waring Road strip from Orcutt to Zion has Grocery Outlet, a donut shop and a few taco counters, and the Benjamin Branch Library is on Zion Avenue. Vons sits just across the line in Grantville. The Green Line trolley stops at Grantville station on Alvarado Canyon Road, and Waring Road drops straight down to Interstate 8. Dining out beyond the basics usually means heading into Mission Valley or College Area. What you get instead is a quiet grid of yards and porches where the rec center, the pool and the ballfields are all within reach of most front doors.
