Pacific Highlands Ranch is among the newest parts of San Diego, a stretch of hills and canyon above State Route 56 that runs north to the San Dieguito River valley and Via de la Valle. Tomato fields, strawberry farms and plant nurseries covered this land until the City approved the development in 1998, and Fairbanks Ranch and Rancho Santa Fe lie just over the river to the north. Pardee Homes built most of the houses in the 2000s, so nearly everything here is newer construction on planned streets that still look freshly finished. About half the community's land was set aside as natural habitat, and canyon open space is never far from the subdivisions. The trail network is the main draw. The Dust Devil Nature Trail, off El Camino Real, makes three easy linked loops that look out over seasonal ponds, and the San Dieguito River Park's Coast to Crest Trail follows the lagoon west with birding spots and osprey nest platforms. Closer to the houses, Solana Ranch Park on Pacific Highlands Ranch Parkway is the local neighborhood park. Most of the shops are at the northwest edge, where Via de la Valle runs toward Del Mar. A Whole Foods anchors one center, and Nectarine Grove Cafe and Bakehouse nearby serves quiche, pastries, smoothies and coffee until mid-afternoon. The village center with its library and restaurants sits just south, across the line in Carmel Valley. Getting around means driving. SR-56 links east to I-15 and west to I-5, and Via de la Valle reaches I-5 and the Del Mar coast in a few minutes. Groceries split between the Via de la Valle stores and the larger centers in Carmel Valley. Distance is the cost. Pacific Highlands Ranch is mostly homes and open space, and a lot of daily life happens a few miles away in Carmel Valley or Del Mar. The payoff shows up in the evening, when the canyons behind the houses go quiet and the lagoon trail is still light enough for a walk.
