Farms and horse ranches once filled the valley floor that Carmel Valley now covers, at the far northwestern edge of San Diego, where I-5 forms the western line and Pacific Highlands Ranch the northern one. The City drew up a plan for a brand-new town here in 1975, calling it North City West, construction started in 1983, and in 1991 residents settled on today's name, after a Sisters of Mercy monastery that once stood in nearby McGonigle Canyon. Because it was planned from scratch, the neighborhood reads in layers. The first single-family tracts went up in the 1980s, building carried on for decades after, and condo and apartment communities sit closer to the shopping centers and office parks. Each section tends to have its own neighborhood park, such as Carmel Creek Park or Carmel Mission Park. The wide open spaces sit at the edges. The Peñasquitos canyon preserve lines the southern boundary with miles of canyon trail, a waterfall and old adobe ruins, and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is just west across the freeway. A recreational and equestrian path threads through the valley, and a few horse properties still hang on. Shopping clusters around two hubs off El Camino Real. Del Mar Highlands Town Center and One Paseo gather most of the restaurants, coffee bars and shops. Achilles Coffee Roasters opened a cafe on Carmel Country Road that pairs its own roasts with scrambles and pancakes. For a once-a-year dinner, Addison at The Grand Del Mar holds three Michelin stars for its California cooking and wine list. Errands are simple by car. Ralphs on Del Mar Heights Road, Pavilions on Valley Centre Drive and a Trader Joe's cover groceries, and the Carmel Valley Library is on Townsgate Drive. State Route 56 runs east through the valley and meets I-5 at the west end, which puts the Sorrento Valley and UTC job centers a short commute away. The town centers sit on big parking lots, and few homes are close enough to walk to them. Still, the canyon preserve on one side and the reserve on the other mean a real trail is never more than a short drive from any front door.
