Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Almaden Lake, Creek Trails, Hillside Enclave

Almaden Valley is where San Jose stops feeling like a city and becomes its own tucked-away valley, boxed in by the Santa Cruz Mountains on the west and the Santa Teresa Hills on the east. The name is a borrowed one: it comes from the quicksilver mines of New Almaden just to the south, which were themselves named in 1846 after Almaden, Spain, the ancient mercury-mining town. For most of the last century this was orchard and ranch country, and it subdivided into some of the city's most in-demand suburbs only in the postwar decades, which is why it still reads more secluded and green than the flatlands north of it. The everyday anchor is Almaden Lake, a former gravel quarry turned swimming and picnic park, and just downstream of it Los Alamitos Creek meets Guadalupe Creek to form the official head of the Guadalupe River, a genuine bit of local geography residents like to point out. The Los Alamitos Creek Trail threads the valley floor, IBM's Almaden Research Center sits on the ridge above (opened 1986, birthplace of the first hard-disk drive and the relational database), and Almaden Plaza handles the shopping with a Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. The schools, though, are the real magnet: families will tour ten houses inside the Leland and Pioneer boundaries before they consider one outside, and Leland High counts the late Army Ranger and NFL safety Pat Tillman among its alumni. Living here means leafy, well-kept streets of 1960s and 70s ranch and two-story homes on real lots, quiet to the point of sleepy, with the hills always in view. The honest tradeoff is distance and dependence on the car: you are a solid twelve miles and a freeway from downtown, the VTA light-rail spur that once reached the valley shut down in 2019, and you will drive for nearly everything. For buyers who want hills, trails and schools more than walkability, that is exactly the trade Almaden asks you to make, and plenty of people make it gladly.
