Almaden Valley, San Jose, CA

Almaden Valley is where San Jose stops feeling like a city and becomes its own tucked-away valley, boxed in by the Santa Cruz Mountains on the west and the Santa Teresa Hills on the east. The name is a borrowed one: it comes from the quicksilver mines of New Almaden just to the south, which were themselves named in 1846 after Almaden, Spain, the ancient mercury-mining town. That geography gives the neighborhood the feel of a hillside enclave, even on its flatter streets. Most homes are ranch houses and two-story designs from the 1960s and 70s, with mature trees and lawns that have had decades to fill in. Streets curve into cul-de-sacs more often than they run in a grid, and plenty of them end with a view of the hills. Almaden Lake Park works as the shared backyard. Picnic lawns, volleyball and bocce line the east shore off Winfield Boulevard, and the west side along the expressway is kept as a wildlife area. From the lake, the Los Alamitos Creek Trail follows the water south to McKean Road, and it is where much of the valley walks, runs and rides. On the other side of the valley, the Stile Ranch trailhead leads up into Santa Teresa County Park. Coffee usually means BLVD Coffee on Meridian Avenue, a roaster with a patio, or Morning Lobby on Almaden Expressway, where the avocado toast has a following. Elements, in a strip center along the expressway, serves Vietnamese and French fusion, with grilled pork in rice crepe and green papaya salad among the regular orders. Country Inn Cafe on Camden Avenue is the old-school breakfast stop for Swedish pancakes. Groceries center on Almaden Plaza, where Whole Foods and Trader Joe's share a parking lot. Daily life runs on the car. No light rail reaches the valley, downtown is a freeway drive away, and most errands start in the driveway. The honest tradeoff is distance and dependence on the car: you are a solid twelve miles and a freeway from downtown, the VTA light-rail spur that once reached the valley shut down in 2019, and you will drive for nearly everything. For buyers who want hills, trails and schools more than walkability, that is exactly the trade Almaden asks you to make, and plenty of people make it gladly.
