Alpine Meadows was conceived as the calmer answer to Squaw. San Francisco skier John Reily and a small group founded it in 1958 and opened it to the public in 1961, deliberately family-oriented and low-key next to its flashier neighbor. The ski area now markets under the Palisades Tahoe banner and connects to Olympic Valley by the Base-to-Base gondola, but the neighborhood itself stayed what it was: a quiet residential valley of single-family mountain homes along Alpine Meadows Road and Bear Creek. With fewer than a hundred homes, this is a small, purely residential pocket, more chalets and custom builds than condos, with a high second-home share and little true ski-in, ski-out since the base sits up the road. Five Lakes and the Tahoe backcountry start right here. The valley carries one of the mountains' hardest memories: the March 1982 avalanche destroyed the ski area's summit terminal and killed seven, even with the resort closed to the public, and survivor Anna Conrad spent five days buried. The homeowners' own association says it plainly, there is only one way in and out from Highway 89. Treat the single road, the avalanche terrain above, and Red Flag days as facts of life here.
