Dollar Point, Tahoe City, CA

Dollar Point had rougher names before it got its dignified one. The Washoe called the headland Chinquapin. Locals once called it the lousy point. Then in 1927 San Francisco shipping magnate Robert Dollar, of the Dollar Steamship Line, bought the estate, his speedboat-racing grandson Stanley summered here, and the map made it official as Dollar Point in 1962. Earlier still, Lora Knight, who would go on to build Vikingsholm, owned the point in the 1920s. The identity now is the Dollar Point Association, a private membership offering a beach, pier, pool, and tennis courts, wrapped around organized subdivision streets that feel more uniform and upscale than the old west-shore cabin grids. A lakefront tier runs along Edgewater Drive, and Tahoe Cross Country's trails sit just west. Recent lakefront trades here have run well into the eight figures. Two honest notes: the association amenities are voluntary, not automatic with every parcel, so confirm what a given home carries, and access via Highway 28 still routes you back through the Tahoe City Y in summer. It is the polished, amenity-backed address on this stretch of shore.
