Black Mountain Ranch is two planned communities sharing about 5,100 acres of hills at the northern edge of San Diego. Santaluz fills the southern half and Del Sur the northern half, with Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch to the west and 4S Ranch to the east. The two halves feel different. Santaluz was laid out with homes clustered on curving pads that follow the terrain, so more than half its land stays as native grassland and oak, and a golf course runs through the valleys below a large clubhouse. Del Sur is the denser, newer side, built in phases through the 2000s and 2010s by several builders. Its streets mix California Bungalow, Spanish Colonial, Italian Revival and farmhouse-style exteriors, so the blocks do not look stamped from one plan. Trails are the shared language. Santaluz has dozens of miles of paths across its hills that are open to the public, and Del Sur adds its own network of hiking and biking trails, plus neighborhood parks such as Village Green Park on Paseo Del Sur. The Lusardi Creek Loop Trail drops into the canyon country nearby, and the larger Black Mountain Open Space Park sits just outside the community where Carmel Valley Road meets Black Mountain Road. Del Sur Town Center, which opened in 2015, is where daily life collects. Its plazas have fountains and fire pits, and Sprouts covers most grocery runs. Piacere Mio serves traditional Italian with house pastas, pizza and lasagna, and it has patio seating for warm evenings. A few other casual counters and coffee spots fill out the center, but for a bigger dinner out, people head to 4S Ranch or Carmel Mountain Ranch. Getting anywhere means driving. Camino del Sur links the community south to State Route 56, Camino del Norte heads east to Interstate 15, and Carmel Valley Road and San Dieguito Road reach west toward the coast. Del Sur Elementary and Del Norte High, both in the Poway Unified School District, opened in 2008 and 2009. Distance is part of the deal here. The nearest larger shopping sits in neighboring communities, and the coast is a real drive. In return, Black Mountain Ranch has hills that stay mostly open, and from many streets the evening light settles on grassland rather than rooftops.
