Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Patterson Park amenities, Winding wartime subdivision, Airport-edge value

Brookfield Village is an unusual piece of East Oakland: a WWII-era subdivision of more than a thousand homes laid out on winding, contoured streets rather than the flat grid that defines most of the flats. Built quickly for wartime shipyard and factory workers on land near the airport, it still reads as its own self-contained pocket, bounded by 98th and Edes, with modest single-story houses and shade trees lining the curving blocks. The neighborhood's anchor is William Patterson Park, one of Oakland's oldest green spaces, which packs in walking paths, athletic courts, the East Oakland Sports Center, the Ira Jinkins Community Center, and the Brookfield branch library. That is a real concentration of public amenities for this part of town. Day-to-day shopping leans on International Boulevard and a drive to larger stores, and the airport and I-880 sit close enough to register as background noise. Brookfield carries a strong sense of itself, the kind of place that produced Damian Lillard and still organizes around its park and schools. The winding street pattern gives it a softer feel than neighboring tracts, and prices are among the lowest in the city. Buyers balance that against the industrial and airport edges, limited retail, and the safety concerns common to this corner of East Oakland.
