Carmel Mountain Ranch is the part of north San Diego where Ted Williams Parkway meets Interstate 15, and that location shapes it. A row of shopping centers lines Carmel Mountain Road right off the freeway exit, and the homes climb the hills behind them, with Rancho Bernardo above, Rancho Peñasquitos across the freeway and Poway on the east side. Most of the neighborhood was planned in the 1970s and early 1980s and built out through the 1990s, so the homes are planned tracts from those decades, with close to 5,000 in place by 1999. The biggest recent change began in 2018, when the neighborhood's country club shut down. After a short fight over rezoning, most of the old golf course was developed, so a newer generation of homes now sits where the fairways used to be. Parks fill some of that gap. Highland Ranch Park sits north of Eastbourne Road, and the recreation center shared with Sabre Springs, just north of Ted Williams Parkway, has two baseball diamonds, basketball courts and a playground. For a longer walk, the Peñasquitos Creek trail runs through South Creek Park in Sabre Springs, just to the south. Restaurants in Carmel Mountain Ranch are plentiful, and most of them are chains, but two local names are worth knowing. Mostra Coffee, an award-winning San Diego roaster with a line of Philippine coffees, has a cafe in a center on Carmel Mountain Road. Champagne Bakery, down the same road, runs an all-day breakfast menu alongside its pastry case. Errands are about as easy as suburban errands get. Ralphs anchors one center, Costco anchors Price Plaza, and the Carmel Mountain Ranch Library is on World Trade Drive. Most trips onto I-15 start at the Carmel Mountain Road ramps, and Ted Williams Parkway turns into State Route 56 heading west. Public schools here fall under Poway Unified. Living beside a regional shopping hub means sharing Carmel Mountain Road with shoppers from all over the north county. Up the hill, though, the streets are quiet, and the grocery store, the library and a park are all minutes from the front door.
