Carnelian Bay is the north shore's wooden-boat town, and its history is delightfully odd. It was originally spelled Cornelian, for the translucent red and yellow stones that littered the beach, until the 1880s. Before that, in 1871, Dr. George Bourne opened a health spa here and got so carried away he petitioned to rename the whole lake Sanatoria. The Flick brothers, three Illinois men all born on Christmas Day, bought his holdings in the 1890s and left their name on Flick Point. The identity now is classic-boat culture. Gar Woods Grill and Pier, named for the speedboat legend, sits on the water, and Sierra Boat Company, founded in 1952, runs a 120-slip marina and one of Tahoe's premier wooden-boat restoration yards. Prized lakefront and pier-and-buoy homes cluster near that strip, with leafier cabin and mid-century lots rising up the hillside. The honest notes are small: the commercial strip is thin and linear along Highway 28, so traffic and noise ride the lake-side edge, public parking is limited, and services spread between Kings Beach and Tahoe City. For lakefront heritage with a genuine sense of place, it earns its price.
