Carson Park is the stretch of east Lakewood where the city's early 1950s building boom still sets the look of almost every block. The houses went up nearly all at once, and seventy years of owners have since made each one their own, so the streets feel uniform from a distance and personal up close. Lots are regular and flat, with a driveway and front lawn setting the rhythm of each street. Del Valle Park on Henrilee Street is the neighborhood's green space, and it carries more history than most city parks. A Douglas Skyknight jet from the Korean War years, restored for display, stands in its Veterans Memorial Plaza, dedicated in 1964, and the park hosts Lakewood's Memorial Day observance and a run of summer concerts. Woodruff Avenue is where errands happen. Javatinis Espresso on Woodruff is the coffee stop people settle into with a laptop, pairing lattes with bagels, croissants and oatmeal. Valentino's Pizza holds down a small row of storefronts on Carson Street near the neighborhood's southern edge. Getting around is mostly a driving routine. Long Beach Transit buses run the main boulevards, and the 605 freeway is close for trips north or toward Orange County, but most days start in the driveway. The tradeoff is size. The original floor plans are small by current standards, so growing a house here usually means giving up some of the yard. What the neighborhood gets right is proximity, with the park, the library, three grocery stores and a good latte all close enough that a quick errand rarely means a real drive.
