Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Castlemont High anchor, Foothill-base grid, Affordable East Oakland

Castlemont sits at the base of the East Oakland hills, several blocks back from International Boulevard and named for the high school that has anchored it since 1929. The streets are a flat grid of 1920s and post-war homes on small lots, with the familiar deep-East-Oakland pattern of well-kept houses and drought gardens sitting next to properties that have seen better decades. The land tilts up toward the foothills at the eastern edge, where MacArthur and the slopes begin. There is little retail inside the boundary itself; daily needs cluster down on International and Bancroft, with their taquerias, markets, and frequent AC Transit service, and bigger runs happen at Foothill Square. Castlemont High, with its medieval-style original building and its health, education, and visual-storytelling pathways, doubles as the neighborhood's landmark and its civic center. Green space is thin, so families lean on the nearby Arroyo Viejo and King Estate areas uphill. Castlemont is one of the more affordable footholds in the city, and it carries a deep, durable sense of community identity built around the school. Buyers should be clear-eyed about the tradeoffs that come with it: limited parks and shops inside the boundary, uneven upkeep block to block, and the public-safety concerns that this part of East Oakland is known for.
