Central Modesto sits between the old downtown grid and the newer subdivisions to the north, and McHenry Avenue is the road that ties it together. The Graffiti USA Classic Car Museum is the stop for anyone who wants a look at the cruising years that made Modesto famous. The side streets mix Spanish Revival houses, stucco Craftsman homes and ranch houses, so a single block can show three or four styles, and some remodels sit right beside the vintage bungalows. Around Sycamore and Magnolia Avenues the cottages come with serious front gardens, and lots stay modest all through the area. The gardens give the streets a lived-in look that the newer parts of Modesto have not had time to grow. Roosevelt Park and John Muir Park cover everyday outdoor time. For a longer stretch, the Virginia Corridor Trailway follows an old railroad corridor for nearly three miles of paved walking and cycling, with road crossings marked by signs and signals. Because the crossings are lit, evening walks and rides feel manageable. Fast Eddie's MOAB on Tully Road serves drive-in style burgers with pinball and arcade games in the back, and Garcia JoJo's on McHenry is the stop for crunchy tacos and burritos. Giacomo's Espresso runs a drive-thru for macchiatos and house pastries, and Mango Crazy on McHenry handles dessert. Sprouts and O'Brien's Market anchor the weekly grocery run, a Walmart Neighborhood Market fills in for quick trips, and Costco sits just across the line in Standiford. McHenry Village holds more everyday shops. StanRTA buses serve McHenry and Orangeburg Avenues, and Highway 99 is the way toward Stockton and Sacramento. McHenry takes most of the noise and traffic, while the side streets stay residential. Turn off it onto the Craftsman blocks and Central Modesto feels like a different neighborhood, one worth a slow drive past the gardens.
