First, the disclaimer locals always have to give: this is the Clayton neighborhood inside Concord, not the separate city of Clayton a few miles east. The name causes endless mix-ups. What you actually get is a central Concord pocket on the Clayton Road side of the city, close to downtown and the Concord BART station. Homes are classic mid-century Concord, single-story ranches on flat, walkable blocks that have held up well. The Clayton Road corridor handles the everyday shopping, and you're a quick hop from Todos Santos Plaza when you want restaurants and the Tuesday farmers market. It's a quieter, steadier read than the Monument side of town, and it lands as a sensible middle ground: central, calm streets, and easy freeway and transit access without downtown prices. Just be ready to clarify which Clayton you mean every single time you tell someone where you live.
