Walnut Country, often called The Crossings, is Concord's classic planned community, 1,062 homes laid out in the early 1970s in the foothills of Mount Diablo between Walnut Creek and Clayton. It was built around amenities, and that's still the draw. Membership comes with three pools, seven tennis courts, pickleball, a clubhouse, playgrounds, and a dog park, and the swim team is a genuine neighborhood institution. The homes are well-kept single-family stock with entrances off Cowell, Turtle Creek, and Ayers Roads, and the school reach is strong, including Foothill Middle and Northgate High over the Walnut Creek line plus Mt. Diablo Elementary. The honest tradeoff is that this is an inward-facing community: there's no retail inside it, so every errand is a drive out, and you pay a premium for the amenities and the address. But if you want a safe, polished, recreation-rich Concord neighborhood with a real sense of identity, The Crossings is the standard the city's other planned developments measure against.
