Columbia is the part of downtown San Diego where Broadway runs west to the water, a district of office towers, condo high-rises and train platforms between Little Italy and the Marina. Weekdays it hums with office workers, and the people who live here get the bay, the rail hub and the rest of downtown on foot. Condo towers define housing in Columbia. Most homes are units in high-rises that went up from the 2000s on, several of them past twenty floors, and the upper stories look straight over the bay. New towers and the long-running redevelopment of the North Embarcadero keep changing the skyline. The Santa Fe Depot on Kettner Boulevard is the reason a car is optional here. Trolley, Coaster and Pacific Surfliner trains all stop there, so commuting up the coast or across the city starts from the same platforms, and the airport is a short hop north. Lane Field Park, at the foot of Broadway on North Harbor Drive, occupies the ground where the Pacific Coast League Padres played from 1936 to 1957, and the park marks the spot with a home plate, a pitcher's mound and bases. Picnic tables and benches make it an easy lunch stop, and the bayfront promenade runs right past it. Karl Strauss on Columbia Street is where San Diego's craft beer run began in 1989, and the original brewpub still brews small batches of Red Trolley Ale on a seven-barrel system after a 2025 remodel. Achilles Coffee Roasters works out of a shaded courtyard at 800 B Street, pulling single-origin pour-overs and making breakfast sandwiches for the office crowd. For groceries, a Ralphs supermarket sits a few blocks south in the Marina. Evenings tell you what kind of place this is. Once the offices let out, several blocks around the courthouses and banks go quiet, and the dining and nightlife crowds head to the Gaslamp Quarter or Little Italy instead. Residents who like that calm get a short walk to either one, plus a front-row seat on the bay.
