Downtown El Monte keeps the city's history and its daily errands inside the same few blocks. The El Monte Historical Museum and the city library share Tyler Avenue, the pedestrian stretch of Main Street and Valley Mall runs a short walk away, and the town still leans on its old claim as the place where the Santa Fe Trail ended. Homes downtown are an eclectic mix. Much of what stands here went up in the decades after World War II, when tract houses replaced the walnut groves the town was once known for, and street patterns change from one block to the next. Tony Arceo Memorial Park on Tyler Avenue is the green space most people use, next door to the El Monte Community Center, and the El Monte Aquatic Center sits on Mildred Street. Peck Road carries a lot of the eating. Havana Club serves Cuban plates like arroz con pollo and oxtail in a wood-paneled dining room, and Tierra Mia Coffee runs a drive-thru known for horchata lattes and Mexican chocolate drinks. Over on Garvey Avenue, 7 Leaves Cafe is the usual stop for Vietnamese-style house coffee. Groceries mostly happen at Northgate Gonzalez Market on Peck Road or Food 4 Less on Garvey. El Monte station, on Santa Anita beside the freeway, is the eastern end of the Metro J Line and a stop for Foothill Transit's Silver Streak, so a bus commute toward downtown Los Angeles starts close to home. Living in Downtown El Monte puts the town museum, the library, a plate of Cuban oxtail and a regional bus terminal all within a mile or so of the front door.
