Downtown Gilroy is the part of the city that actually works as a downtown, built around Monterey Street and its row of restaurants, bars, and storefronts, with Gourmet Alley tucked in behind. The Gilroy Caltrain station sits right inside the district, which makes this the one neighborhood where you can realistically get by without leaning on a car for everything. The building stock is older and mixed, commercial fronts giving way to modest homes on the side streets between Carmel and East 10th. There has been a steady, slow revitalization push along Monterey, and you can see it in the newer businesses, though it reads as a work in progress rather than a finished product. This is the most walkable address in Gilroy, full stop, but it's also the busiest and the roughest around the edges. If you want storefronts and a train platform within walking distance, downtown delivers. If you want quiet and polish, the west-side hills are the better fit.
