East Grove is the big northeast quarter of Escondido, roughly 15 square miles that climb from El Norte Parkway and East Valley Parkway into boulder-strewn hills at the edge of Daley Ranch. The farther in you drive, the more the subdivisions give way to avocado slopes, horse property and open chaparral. Dixon Lake and Daley Ranch set the tone. The lake, off La Honda Drive, is open year-round for fishing, with rental boats that tend to sell out early and a campground by reservation. Daley Ranch, right behind it, is a 3,201-acre city conservation area with more than 25 miles of trails. The Boulder Loop looks out over the valley, and from the Valley Center Road trailhead the Caballo Trail leads toward Stanley Peak, the ranch's high point at 1,983 feet. Closer to home, Ryan Park has 67 acres and a run of ball fields, El Caballo Park serves riders, and Mayflower Dog Park has 1.5 fenced acres for off-leash dogs. On the west end along North Broadway, Jesmond Dene Park has trails and picnic tables, and Reidy Creek runs an executive golf course that doubles as a disc golf layout. Housing in East Grove covers decades. There are 1970s ranch homes, 1990s stucco tracts, and newer hillside houses with views and rooftop solar, plus a few mobile home parks. Toward the southeast, gated Rancho San Pasqual has Mediterranean houses with tile roofs on cul-de-sacs and its own clubhouse and pool. Eating out mostly happens on the edges. At Country Club Lane on the west side, Good Source Coffee does seasonal lattes and pastries, and Chicken Lisa's grills charbroiled chicken and crispy carnitas, with Frankie's bar attached for the game. Groceries come from the Ralphs center on East Valley Parkway, and most other errands mean heading toward the center of town. Valley Center Road runs north out of the neighborhood, and I-15 is a drive west. Space comes at the cost of distance. Trails and the lake are close, but nearly everything else takes a car, and the hill roads lengthen every trip. On weekend mornings the lot on La Honda Drive fills with anglers carrying tackle down to the lake and hikers heading past it into the ranch.
