At roughly 130 blocks, East Village is the biggest of downtown San Diego's neighborhoods, running from the Padres' ballpark up toward City College and the southern reach of Balboa Park. It was a district of warehouses and loading docks until Petco Park opened in 2004, and the blocks around it have been filling with towers ever since. Living in East Village almost always means an apartment or a condo. Glass high-rises such as the 22-story Radian stand beside repurposed brick warehouses, and some buildings go small, like Ezabelle with its 46 micro units. A few relics survive, including the Sheldon House, an 1886 Queen Anne that was moved to Island Avenue in 1913. The public spaces are compact but well used. Fault Line Park opened as the first park in East Village and packs a playground, a succulent garden and winding paths into 1.3 acres on Island Avenue, laid out to trace the Rose Canyon Fault line running underneath. Quartyard on Market Street, built from shipping containers, hosts concerts and street markets, and the nine-story domed San Diego Central Library sits on Park Boulevard. The food scene runs deep for a downtown district. Callie on Island Avenue, from chef Travis Swikard, cooks Mediterranean plates like aleppo chicken. Sovereign on J Street blends Thai cooking with Laotian and Cambodian technique and has earned Michelin Guide recognition, with crispy duck confit a standout. Cafe de L'Opera, also on J Street, opens at 7 a.m. with croissants, and Basic Bar & Pizza fills a 1912 warehouse on 10th Avenue and stays open late. Daily life works without a car. Albertsons on 14th Street and Smart & Final on 15th Street cover groceries, and the 12th & Imperial Transit Center is where the Blue, Green, Orange and Silver trolley lines all meet. Park & Market and City College stations add two more stops. Game nights change the place. When the Padres play or a concert lets out, the streets around the ballpark fill with crowds and traffic, and new construction keeps cranes and closed sidewalks in the picture. On a quiet weekday morning, though, the same blocks feel like a small neighborhood where the library, the park and the trolley all sit within walking range.
