Eastmont is the flatland neighborhood built around Eastmont Town Center, the former Eastmont Mall that opened in the late 1960s on the site of a 1920s Chevrolet assembly plant. The center long ago shed its role as a shopping destination and reinvented itself as a community services hub, with a police substation, a health clinic, and county offices filling space once held by department stores. The surrounding streets, around Bancroft and 73rd, are a grid of post-war homes on small lots with the mixed upkeep typical of deep East Oakland. That town center is genuinely the neighborhood's anchor. It puts a grocery, a medical clinic, civic offices, and bus connections in one place, which matters in a part of town where retail is otherwise thin. Beyond it, daily life runs on the Foothill and Bancroft corridors and a car, and dedicated park space inside the boundary is limited, so green time means a trip to one of the nearby East Oakland parks. Eastmont's story is really the story of that mall site, a piece of Oakland that has been remade more than once and is now leaned on for services rather than shopping. The honest frame for buyers is consistent with the area: affordability and one-stop access at the town center weighed against thin greenery, uneven streetscapes, and the public-safety concerns these blocks are known for.
