Across Interstate 805 from the rest of town, El Toyon holds the northeast end of National City, running from 16th Street up to the San Diego city line. East Plaza Boulevard is its main road, and the stretch inside the neighborhood is lined with Filipino turo-turo counters, bakeries and markets. Housing follows the citywide pattern. Most homes went up before 1980, single-family houses fill the side streets, and apartment buildings line the busier roads. Paradise Valley Hospital, the city's acute care hospital, sits inside the neighborhood, and its campus is the biggest landmark on this side of the freeway. El Toyon Park is the neighborhood's gathering place. The recreation center on East 4th Street has a turf field, basketball and tennis courts, and a fenced dog run with an agility course, and its indoor room hosts everything from esports nights to ballet folklorico classes. For laps, the city pool at Las Palmas Park is about two miles south. Plaza Boulevard is where most people go to eat. Along the boulevard, Red Ribbon Bakeshop sells mango and ube celebration cakes and butter mamon. On East 8th Street, Kujo Eats cooks family recipes like kare kare and chicken adobo, plus mais con yelo for dessert. Groceries are close. Island Pacific, a Filipino supermarket, anchors the 2720 E Plaza center, and Vallarta Supermarkets on Euclid Avenue is the other big stop. Most trips still start in a car, as they do across town, and I-805 on the western edge is the quick way north to San Diego or south to Chula Vista. Blocks nearest I-805 live with steady freeway noise, and Plaza Boulevard slows at rush hour around the shopping centers. Still, with its own neighborhood council, its own park and its own shopping street, El Toyon can go most of a week without a trip across the freeway.
