This is Elk Grove's lake-and-refuge side. The Stonelake area built out in the early 2000s on the west edge of town, and its identity is water and open space: a community lake, well-kept parks, and a walking path that runs right along the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge just beyond the homes. Franklin Boulevard forms the eastern edge and Elk Grove Boulevard the south, but the interior feels insulated from both, with a private-clubhouse, pool-and-trail rhythm the grid neighborhoods east of here do not offer. The refuge means herons and open sky on your western horizon instead of another row of rooftops. The tradeoff is errands. This is a drive-to-everything pocket, and the wildlife refuge that makes the west edge so pleasant also means low-lying ground and seasonal water close by. For buyers who would rather wake up next to a trail and a marsh than a parking lot, the Four Winds stretch of Stonelake is one of the calmer addresses in Elk Grove.
