Despite the name, this is the old heart of Elk Grove, not a glassy new downtown. The area hugs Elk Grove Boulevard near Elk Grove-Florin Road, with Elk Grove High School, the city's oldest campus, sitting inside the boundary and Old Town's historic blocks a short walk or drive east. This is where the town's longer history is still visible. The housing stock skews older and more varied than the master-planned south and west, the streets are flatter and more gridded, and Elk Grove Regional Park, with its lake and Strauss Island, is just up Elk Grove-Florin Road. That central position puts the farmers market, the Western Festival, and the everyday civic life of the original town close at hand. The tradeoff is that central and older also means more arterial traffic and more uneven upkeep block to block than you get in the newer subdivisions. If you want polish and predictability, the west side has it. If you want to live where Elk Grove actually started, this is the spot.
