Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Affordable bungalow blocks, Industrial-residential mix, International Boulevard transit

Elmhurst Park occupies a long, flat strip between the Union Pacific tracks on San Leandro Street and busy International Boulevard. Interior lanes like Ellington, Clement, and Dunbar hold 1920s-to-40s cottages and modest post-war ranches behind low chain-link or wrought-iron fences. West of Hawley, the residential blocks give way to small warehouses, trucking yards, and the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, so the feel shifts quickly from quiet porches to forklift beeps and diesel. Everyday services cluster on International. Residents walk to a mercado, several taquerias, and a 24-hour gas mini-mart, though full-service groceries mean a short drive north to Foothill Square or east to Bancroft. There is no parkland inside the boundary, so families head to Verdese Carter or Eula Brinson Park, both about five minutes by car. The International rapid bus runs frequently to Coliseum and Fruitvale BART, but freight trains and late-night traffic keep ambient noise high, especially for homes along San Leandro Street. Life here is residential with an industrial edge, longtime owners gardening beside fresh paint jobs, kids biking the low-traffic mid-block stretches, church bells mixing with passing semis. The pull is some of Oakland's more affordable single-family prices and easy freeway access; the things to weigh are limited green space, light industrial traffic, and upkeep that varies block to block.
