Fairmount Park is a mostly single-family neighborhood about three miles from downtown San Diego, set inside a triangle of freeways: Interstate 15 on the west, Interstate 805 on the east and State Route 94 along the south. It belongs to the City Heights planning area but feels separate, since the freeways wall it off from busier streets. South Park and Golden Hill sit across I-15 to the west, and Webster lies south of SR 94. Houses make up most of the housing in Fairmount Park, on streets that rise and fall around the Chollas Creek drainage. Bayridge, a small enclave on the western knoll, adds a tidy townhouse complex with views. Elsewhere the streets are lined with detached houses. Home Avenue holds the neighborhood's only commercial block. Captain Sam's Fish & Chicken, at 4111 Home Avenue, fries East Coast-style catfish, jumbo shrimp and wings, with banana pudding for dessert. My Market in the same center covers basics, and a couple of taco and pizza counters share the strip. For outdoor time, Azalea Community Park sits just across the eastern edge in Azalea Park, home to the Water Conservation Garden. Juniper Canyon Open Space lies a short distance west in North Park, and Dennis V. Allen Park in Mount Hope is a few minutes south. Daily errands beyond Home Avenue mean driving, though the drive is quick. Three freeways touch the neighborhood, so downtown and the South Bay are both a short hop, and buses run on the bigger roads nearby. Mount Hope, with its historic city cemetery, lies across SR 94 to the south. Freeway noise is part of the setting. Few streets are far from I-15, I-805 or SR 94, and retail is thin enough that groceries, coffee and most dinners out happen somewhere else. What Fairmount Park offers in return is a run of mostly single-family streets three miles from downtown, with on-ramps in every direction.
