Fire Mountain takes its name from the road that winds through it, and the hills are the whole idea. This Oceanside neighborhood climbs the slopes east of Interstate 5 and north of State Route 78, out to El Camino Real, and plenty of its streets catch a strip of ocean on the horizon. Until the 1960s it was an island of unincorporated county land ringed by the city, planted in avocado and citrus groves. Those groves gave way to a mix of houses rather than one big tract. Ranch houses and mid-century homes sit beside custom builds and full rebuilds, on lots that run from ordinary to roomy. A Spanish-style cottage with fruit trees in the front yard, a modern farmhouse with a backyard ADU and townhomes stepped into a hillside can all turn up within a few streets. Roads bend with the terrain, and some of them have no sidewalks. Outdoor time here starts at the front door. Walks up the grades come with views west, especially near sunset, and Joseph Carrasco Park on Skylark Drive gives the streets a patch of lawn and play space. The beach and the shops of South Oceanside are a quick drive down the hill when you want sand instead of slope. Food gathers at the eastern edge, where the El Camino North shopping strip lines Vista Way. Ten Gu Ramen slow-simmers its tonkotsu broth and also does udon and an eel bowl, and Sushi Yukiya, a short walk along the same strip, sells sushi along with sake and beer to go. Broken Yolk Cafe covers the weekend breakfast crowd. Errands are unusually easy for a hillside neighborhood. Trader Joe's and a Walmart Supercenter both sit on Vista Way, WinCo Foods and Target face El Camino Real, and Smart and Final is down on Oceanside Boulevard. With Interstate 5 and Route 78 at the edges, Carlsbad and the inland cities are equally close by car. The slopes that deliver the views also bring steep driveways, retaining walls and stretches where you walk on the shoulder. In exchange, Fire Mountain sits above the beach traffic, and on a clear afternoon the ocean looks closer than the freeway below.
