Guajome wraps around the lake and county park that share its name in northeastern Oceanside, where the city meets Vista. Long before the subdivisions, Luiseño villages stood here, and the land still feels greener and more open than most of the city's suburbs. Guajome Regional Park, on Guajome Lake Road, is the centerpiece. Trails circle the lake, there are two playgrounds and an exercise station, and the campground rents cabins, so a morning loop around the water can start at the front door. Just across North Santa Fe Avenue in Vista, the Rancho Guajome Adobe, built in 1852 and 1853, is a National Historic Landmark you can tour. Closer in, Alamosa Park on Mesa Drive has big shade trees, barbecues and a multipurpose field. Homes here are mostly late twentieth and early twenty-first century subdivisions, with two-car garages, compact yards and homeowner associations keeping the common areas tidy. Jeffries Ranch and Mission Meadows are two of the familiar tract names, Rancho Rose is a community of about 70 townhomes, and a few houses near the park look out toward the lake. Restaurants sit just outside the neighborhood rather than inside it. Marieta's on Vandegrift Boulevard makes its Mexican food and sauces from scratch, and the chili verde and weekend brunch get the most praise. For a sandwich after nine holes, Fairways Kitchen & Bar at Arrowood Golf Course on Village Drive does a tri tip sandwich that reviewers single out. Groceries mean a quick drive down College Boulevard, where Sprouts and the shops near Mission Avenue fill the corners, and Vons is a little farther south. State Route 76 is close by and connects to Interstate 5 at the coast. Cyclists can pick up the San Luis Rey River Trail for a flat ride all the way to the harbor. Almost everything outside the park means getting in the car, and the commercial strips on College Boulevard are big and busy. The neighborhood itself is quiet once you turn off the main roads. Living in Guajome puts a lake and a campground closer to home than the nearest supermarket.
