Errands shape the Lake neighborhood more than anything else in this part of Oceanside. It covers the stretch just south of State Route 78 around College Boulevard, where shopping centers on Marron Road and Plaza Drive meet residential streets, and its southern edge runs up against the open slopes of the Lake Calavera preserve. The commercial side comes first for most people. Albertsons anchors the Marron Road center, and Grocery Outlet sits on College Boulevard, so the weekly shop rarely takes more than a few minutes. Plaza Drive has a run of small restaurants and takeout counters, and a Starbucks on each of the two main corridors handles the coffee run. Behind the storefronts, the rest of Lake is homes. Residential streets and complexes fill the land between the shopping and the preserve, and convenience and quick freeway access count for more here than architecture. The streets are practical and car-oriented, and the commercial frontage sets much of the look. Two Plaza Drive spots stand out. Teri Cafe, family-owned since 1987, serves teriyaki plates, sushi and homemade udon, and Savory Thai cooks home-style Thai with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. The outdoors here is better than the storefronts suggest. Oak Riparian Park, just east on Lake Boulevard, is the main trailhead into the Calavera trail system, with parking, restrooms and shaded paths through oak woodland. From there it is roughly a mile and a half to Lake Calavera and a short scramble up Mount Calavera, a 513-foot volcanic plug with views to the ocean. Getting around is simple. State Route 78 has an exit at College Boulevard, and Carlsbad, Vista and Interstate 5 are each a short drive. The catch is the traffic that comes with being a shopping hub, since Marron Road and College Boulevard get crowded on weekends. Still, few corners of the city put a full grocery store and a lakeside trail this close to the same front door.
