Out past the last subdivisions, Morro Hills is the farm country of Oceanside, a rolling stretch of fields, groves and big parcels along the city's northeastern edge. Roads like Sleeping Indian Road and Wilshire Road wind between growers and estate homes, and it can be hard to believe the harbor is the same city. Property here is measured in acres. Lots of roughly three acres are common along Camino Corto and Grove View Road, and some parcels run to dozens of acres. A handful of gated estates on Sleeping Indian Road come with tack rooms and wide views across the valley. North River Farms, a master-planned community of new two-story houses in five neighborhoods, brings a newer suburban look to the area. Food here is grown more than served. A small orchard among the South Morro Hills farms drew visitors for guava and cherimoya U-pick Sundays until its owners announced their retirement. For a sit-down meal, Fairways Kitchen & Bar at Arrowood Golf Course on Village Drive is close by, with a hilly 18-hole course designed by Ted Robinson Jr. and a tri tip sandwich people mention. Marieta's on Vandegrift Boulevard, a few minutes farther, is the pick for made-from-scratch Mexican food and weekend brunch. Outdoors mostly means your own land and the quiet roads. Guajome Regional Park, with its lake, trails and campground, is a short drive south. Down on the valley floor, the San Luis Rey River Trail heads toward the coast. Errands mean driving. Sprouts and the shopping on College Boulevard are the nearest full grocery run, and Bonsall and Fallbrook are reachable to the north and east. North River Road and State Route 76 carry most trips, and sidewalks are scarce. Space is the draw, and distance is its cost. There are few services nearby, every trip starts in the car, and having more acreage does not mean every use is allowed on it. Morro Hills keeps the feel of a farm district inside a beach city, and any drive through it shows more green than rooftops.
