Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Historic roadside settlement, Affordable flatland grid, Corridor convenience

Fitchburg is one of the old roadside settlements of East Oakland, a name that dates to the 19th century when small communities grew up along the Oakland-San Leandro Road before annexation folded them into the city. Today it reads as a flat residential grid of 1920s cottages and post-war homes in the stretch between Foothill and International, sharing the look and rhythm of the surrounding flats: narrow fenced lots, light tree cover, and upkeep that shifts from block to block. Daily life runs on the corridors. The markets, taquerias, and bakeries of International and Foothill cover quick needs, with larger grocery options a drive away toward Foothill Square, and AC Transit handles the main streets while most trips happen by car. There is little dedicated green space inside the boundary, so park time means heading to one of the nearby East Oakland recreation centers. What distinguishes Fitchburg is mostly its history as a once-independent settlement rather than any single landmark standing today, and the public record on its precise present-day boundaries is thin. The honest read for buyers is the familiar East Oakland equation: affordable stand-alone homes and central access set against limited parks and retail inside the boundary, modest curb appeal, and the safety concerns common to this part of the city.
