The lighted Hillcrest sign over Fifth and University Avenues went up in 1940 and got rainbow LEDs in 2023, and it marks the center of one of San Diego's busiest uptown neighborhoods. Hillcrest began in the late 1800s as a quiet suburb on the streetcar line, and today its blocks of bars, diners, bookshops and record stores stay lively from breakfast to last call. Homes are mostly apartments and condos. Dense new apartment buildings have been replacing century-old bungalows along the main streets, while older cottages and small walk-ups still fill many side streets. A 2024 community plan opened the door to many more residential towers, so construction will be part of the scenery for years. University Avenue and Fifth Avenue carry most of the daily life. Crest Cafe on Robinson Avenue has been family-run since 1983 and is known for its butter burger. Uptown Tavern on University draws crowds for marinated, hand-breaded chicken strips, and Bread & Cie is the morning stop for pastries. Lestat's Hillcrest pours coffee across two floors and a patio on University, and The Rail at Fifth and Robinson, open since the 1960s, is the city's first gay bar. San Diego held its first city-permitted Pride parade here in 1975. Hillcrest has little park space inside its own streets, so people lean on Balboa Park, just to the south, for runs, dog walks and weekend picnics. The Pride Promenade now under construction on Normal Street will add an outdoor gathering space at University Avenue, and the long-running Sunday farmers market is set to make it home. Errands are close at hand. Whole Foods on University and Pavilions on West Washington Street cover groceries, Food 4 Less on University handles the bulk runs, and the Mission Hills-Hillcrest Knox Library is on West Washington. State Route 163 cuts through the eastern side, so downtown and Mission Valley are quick drives. Growth is the sore point. Tower projects take over lots and curb space while they rise, and the low-rise blocks keep giving way to taller buildings. What residents get in exchange is a neighborhood where coffee, dinner and a late drink are all on the same few blocks.
