Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Industrial-edge location, Budget-friendly ranches, Few local parks

Iveywood is a small, flat pocket of East Oakland between 98th and Bancroft, laid out in a tidy grid of numbered cross-streets from 100th to 104th. Most homes are simple post-war ranches and a few earlier bungalows on narrow lots, with front yards often fenced and trimmed in drought-tolerant shrubs or paved over for extra parking. Industrial uses along 98th and the constant traffic on Bancroft give the edges a utilitarian feel, and there is little tree canopy to soften the summer heat. Amenities are limited inside the boundary. Residents lean on corner markets, a taqueria, and auto-parts shops along 98th for quick errands, with larger groceries a short drive north toward Foothill Square. Elmhurst United Middle School and its playfields sit just past the northern edge, but there is no dedicated park within Iveywood itself, so families head to Tassafaronga or Brookfield a few minutes away. Buses run frequently on International and Bancroft, yet most trips still happen by car, and speeding on the through-streets is a recurring complaint. Daily life is quiet during work hours and busier at school dismissal, with neighbors keeping an eye on one another and clean-ups popping up in warmer months. Modest prices draw buyers after a stand-alone house; the tradeoffs are freeway noise from I-880, scarce green space, and after-dark safety concerns that have many residents adding cameras and extra lighting.
