Most of San Diego knows Kearny Mesa for lunch. The broad mesa, running from Aero Drive up to State Route 52 with Interstates 805 and 15 on its flanks, is mainly offices, auto dealers, warehouses and the runways of Montgomery Field, and threaded through all of it is the Convoy District, the city's pan-Asian food and shopping strip. The business side has a long backstory. The name comes from Camp Kearny, the military base that later became MCAS Miramar, and aerospace and electronics plants moved onto the old military land after 1955. Homes are a smaller share of the map. Stonecrest and the Spectrum development, built where General Dynamics once had its plant, hold most of them, laid out around small planned greens such as Centrum Park, and older pockets like Kearny Lodge and Royal Highlands add a few streets more. Convoy Street and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard are where the eating happens, and the choices run block after block. Mitsuwa Marketplace on Kearny Mesa Road is a Japanese grocery with a food hall inside, where Santouka serves Hokkaido-style ramen at the counter. Ketch Brewing runs a brewpub on Ostrow Street, known for the Brig Blonde that took gold at the Great American Beer Festival in 2025. Societe Brewing pours its own beer in an independent tasting room on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. Groceries are a strength. Besides Mitsuwa, the district has 99 Ranch Market, H Mart and Zion Market, so Korean and Chinese pantry staples are all within a mile or two of each other. Everything runs on the car. Freeway access is easy in all four directions, and SR-163 cuts through the west side. Green space is the thin part of life here. Beyond the planned pocket parks in Spectrum and Stonecrest, the nearest real open space is Ruffin Canyon, just over Aero Drive in Serra Mesa, and small planes come and go from Montgomery Field all day. Living in Kearny Mesa means giving up a yard and a canyon view in exchange for a bowl of ramen or a Japanese grocery run that takes five minutes instead of a weekend trip.
