Kensington sits on a narrow mesa above Mission Valley in San Diego, with canyon slopes dropping away on three sides and only a handful of ways in. That geography is why the streets curve the way they do and why the neighborhood still reads as its own place, apart from Normal Heights to the west and City Heights to the south. Homes in Kensington date mostly from the streetcar years and the building boom of the late 1920s. Early houses were Craftsman, and Spanish Revival took over later, with tile roofs, arched doorways and rounded chimneys, much of it shaped by architect Richard Requa. Kensington Heights, the last of the original subdivisions, was laid out in 1926 on the rim overlooking the valley. Stone gateways and ornamental streetlights still mark the older blocks, and the stock changes slowly because so much of it is original. Adams Avenue is the five-block main street, under the neon Kensington sign the community first hung in 1953. Ponce's, family run since 1969, pours margaritas and serves birria and hardshell chicken tacos. Kensington Cafe does breakfast and lunch with a dog-friendly patio, and Pappalecco pulls Italian espresso and scoops gelato at the east end. For dinner, Bleu Boheme cooks French bistro classics like duck leg confit. Outdoors means the canyon edges. Much of the slope land around the mesa is kept as open space, so walks tend to loop the rim streets with long views north across Mission Valley. For a big lawn or a picnic, Balboa Park is a few miles southwest. Daily errands mostly stay on Adams. Stehly Farms Market sells organic produce from its North County farm, Clem's has a deli and a bottle shop, and the Kensington-Normal Heights branch library sits on the same strip. Interstate 15 and Interstate 8 border the neighborhood, so the freeway is close in two directions. Parking along Adams fills up on weekend evenings, and with only a few roads onto the mesa, traffic squeezes through the same intersections. In exchange, a night out is a stroll down the block, and the canyon keeps the noise of the city below the rim.
