Laguna West is the marquee address on this side of Elk Grove, and it earns the billing. Built in the early 1990s to a Peter Calthorpe master plan, it is one of Northern California's signature New Urbanist communities, organized around a 73-acre private recreational lake with a deliberate, walkable layout that put Laguna Town Hall, parks, and waterfront access at the center instead of a strip mall. The result feels designed rather than merely developed. Bartholomew Park and its small lake sit inside, mature trees line the streets, and the lake and town hall give residents a real shared center, the kind of place where the Fourth of July actually happens somewhere. It sits west of Interstate 5, which keeps it set apart from the rest of town in a way people either love or find a touch isolated. The tradeoffs are HOA living and a price that reflects the lake and the planning. But for distinctive architecture, genuine waterfront, and a walkable community core, nothing else in Elk Grove is quite in the same category.
