Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Waterfront high rises, Lakeside trail access, Downtown edge convenience

Lakeside hugs the southwestern shore of Lake Merritt, running from 14th Street up to Harrison. Along Lakeside Drive a string of 1920s Art Deco towers, mid-century high-rises, and newer glass condos stares directly onto the water, while the interior grid of Jackson, Alice, and Madison flattens out with low-rise apartment courts and a few early Craftsman holdouts. The broad lawns of Snow Park fill the north corner, and the sidewalks are wide and continuous even as traffic hums on Harrison and 14th at rush hour. The lake is the backyard. Residents step onto the three-mile shoreline trail for a jog, rent kayaks by the hour, or grab a table at Lake Chalet, the restored 1909 boathouse that floats over the water. The main library branch anchors the south edge, and weekly food trucks set up near the Scottish Rite Center. Grocery options are limited inside the boundary, so most locals walk or bike to Uptown markets a few blocks west, and parking tightens on weekends while tents sometimes gather around Snow Park. Lakeside feels urban but relaxed, runners and dog walkers circling the lake at dawn, office workers picnicking on park benches by afternoon, the water and high-rise windows glowing at night. The draw is walk-out recreation, skyline and lake views, and quick BART and downtown access, with perimeter traffic and a shortage of private yard space as the honest tradeoffs.
