Larkey Park takes its name from the park that anchors it, and that park is the reason to be here. North of downtown Walnut Creek, the neighborhood wraps around 13 acres that include a renovated swim center, a splash pad, playgrounds, and the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, the wildlife museum and animal hospital that's a genuine local institution. The Contra Costa Canal Trail crosses through, linking into the regional path network. The homes are mostly modest midcentury ranches with mature trees and real yards, and the everyday appeal is the easy access to recreation right out the door. For a neighborhood this close to downtown, the park access is hard to beat. The candid part is that the homes themselves are unassuming and the immediate area's safety and school numbers don't match the city's southern hill pockets. You'll also drive for most shopping. But if proximity to a genuinely good park and a short hop to downtown rank high for you, Larkey Park delivers something pricier neighborhoods can't.
