Larkin Valley is a quiet agricultural valley near Watsonville, and its best-known landmark is the Castro Adobe. It is the farm-country half of the Aptos Hills-Larkin Valley area. The Castro family built the two-story hacienda in the late 1840s, and it stands off Old Adobe Road as a state historic park in the making. Visitors get in on scheduled open house days, between 10:30 and 3:30, while restoration work goes on with a friends group. Upstairs, a fandango room gave the rancho family a place to host dances. Around the house, Larkin Valley is open farmland, rolling hills and scattered homes on acreage. Many properties are ranch-style houses and hillside homes with room for gardens, orchards or a horse, and neighbors are a few hundred feet apart rather than a few feet. The roads are narrow country lanes that wind between fields. Outdoor time here is mostly on your own land and along the lanes, with the Pajaro Valley's farm country stretching out below. The beaches are a drive away, and larger trail systems are in the redwoods above Aptos. Food and coffee are a short drive south and east, along Freedom Boulevard. Cadillac Cafe at 2906 Freedom Boulevard serves breakfast and lunch in a 1950s diner setting and is closed on Mondays. Corralitos Brewing Company has indoor and outdoor seating for a pint, and Corralitos Market & Sausage Company, a few minutes on, is a long-running country butcher counter and deli. For groceries and services, Watsonville is the closest full-sized town, and Aptos Village is a drive in the other direction. The freeway is the main route for work, so mornings start with a run down the valley to reach it. Space and quiet come with driving time, and the payoff shows up in the evening when the loudest sound is wind in the orchards.
