Neighborhood Reviews & Questions

Neighborhood Review
Key Words: Lockwood Gardens core, Near Coliseum BART, Rainbow Rec Center

Lockwood-Tevis sits in East Oakland around 65th Avenue, less than a mile from the Coliseum and anchored by Lockwood Gardens, the Oakland Housing Authority development that locals know as the 6-5 Vill. The surrounding blocks are flat, with post-war homes and apartments on small lots, the public-housing courts giving the neighborhood much of its identity and its tight internal community. Foothill and International frame it, and the rail and freeway corridors are never far. Daily life runs on the corridors and a car. The markets, taquerias, and quick-serve spots of International and Foothill cover the basics, Coliseum BART is within reach for a regional ride, and the Rainbow Recreation Center to the north offers courts, a field, and programming for all ages. Dedicated green space inside the boundary is otherwise limited, and the freeway and stadium traffic keep a low rumble going. Lockwood-Tevis is dense, affordable, and close-knit, a part of East Oakland defined by its housing courts and its proximity to the Coliseum and BART. The honest frame for buyers and renters is consistent with the area: low cost and strong transit access weighed against thin parkland inside the boundary, modest curb appeal, and the public-safety concerns these blocks have long carried.
