Loma Alta fills the hills and creek bottoms just inland from downtown Oceanside, roughly between Oceanside Boulevard and Mission Avenue, with the city's small municipal airport on its northern side. It feels like the everyday core of the city, older and more varied than the planned tracts farther east. Housing changes quickly from one block to the next. Older subdivisions of detached houses share the hills with condo complexes, apartments and a few gated communities such as Canyon Grove and the Arbor Hill Garden Community, which wraps its buildings in about ten acres of lawn and shade trees. Some hillside streets catch a sunset view toward the water. The food is better than the strip malls suggest. 24 Suns on Mission Avenue began as a pop-up and opened its dining room in 2024, cooking Chinese dishes around Southern California produce, and the dan dan noodles and half duck are the orders people come back for. Out on Roymar Road, The Hangar 76 pairs wood-fired pizza and live music with taps from Tipping Pint and glasses from Carruth Cellars, and the patio has fire pits and room for dogs. Come On Over Cafe on Oceanside Boulevard makes paninis and coffee and has a quiet room for working. Buddy Todd Park on Mesa Drive is the local outdoor spot, with a big playground, a walking path, sports areas and views of both the ocean and the mountains from the top. The beach and downtown are about two miles west, close enough for an evening walk on the pier. Daily errands mostly mean driving one of the two boulevards. Grocery Outlet is on Mission Avenue, and bigger supermarkets sit just east in San Luis Rey and Rancho Del Oro. The Sprinter stops at Crouch Street on its run between the Oceanside Transit Center and Escondido, and Interstate 5 and State Route 76 are both close by. Some blocks sit close to busy arterials, the rail line or freeway noise, and the creek corridor brings drainage questions for homes near it. Small planes come and go from the airport. For a lot of Loma Alta households, the pleasure is being a couple of miles from the sand while living on streets that still feel like an ordinary neighborhood.
